Chiropractic care is not about back pain

– a note from Dr. Cook, your friendly upper cervical care chiropractor in San Diego

Chiropractic Care - Back Pain

When people ask me what I do for a living and I tell them I’m a chiropractor, some typical responses I get are:

“Can you crack my back?”

“Doc, my low back is killing me! Can you fix me?” or

“I don’t need a chiropractor. My back is fine!”

It is a common misconception that chiropractic is only for back pain. However, with countless people getting amazing results with chiropractic (many have been able to avoid surgery), it is natural to associate chiropractic with low back pain. But Chiropractic is so much more than that!

So what is Chiropractic?

1. The Brain Controls ALL Functions in the Body

Chiropractic is about the brain and nervous system, not simply “the back”. Chiropractic is based on the fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism controlled by the brain. The brain communicates with every cell in your body via the nervous system, which includes the brain stem, spinal cord, and nerves. The cells in your body constantly send feedback to your brain via the same communication system. Your nervous system controls all functions in your body – from your behavior and emotion to wiggling your big toe and everything in between. That means the trillions of processes occuring in the body per second are being controlled and regulated by a single organ.

Proper communication is critical for proper function. So if your brain or any part of your nervous system is not communicating properly, do you think the rest of the body is working at its best? Of course not! When there is miscommunication, mistakes happen, and things can go awry.

A chiropractor’s role is to detect dysfunction of the nervous system and restore that proper function so your brain and body can communicate freely once more thus the body can heal itself.

2. Subluxation

A subluxation describes a vertebra being misaligned in relation to another thus putting pressure on a nerve. The subluxation is what causes a break down in communication between in brain and the body.

Read more about the vertebral subluxation here.

3. Chiropractic is Preventative

Just like you brush your teeth every day to prevent tooth decay or exercise regularly to stay fit and prevent disease – Chiropractors maintain peak performance of your nervous system by checking your spine for any subluxations that could be causing nerve dysfunction. Gentle adjustments remove that pressure from the nerve and restores normal function.

Getting your spine checked regularly for subluxation and nerve dysfunction is essential for good health and longevity. Address the problem while it’s still small and easy to deal with. Putting it off allows the problem to snowball and you will eventually have to deal with the consequences ultimately requiring of you more time, energy, and money.

It is easier to stay healthy than to get healthy. Get checked today!

4. Addressing the Cause Instead of Masking the Symptom

Would you rather have fast back or general pain relief but know that the pain will eventually return or take the time to correct what’s causing your problem and not have it return again?

Chiropractors specialize in getting the to root cause of the problem and not simply putting a bandaid over for symptomatic relief. If you want a quick fix, that’s what Tylenol, Aleve, and Vicodin are for. Drugs are much more readily available than chiropractic care so if you are looking for a quick fix, our office is not a good fit for you.

Chiropractic: An Effective and Natural Alternative

Chiropractic care is about restoring balance to the nervous system by addressing the health of the spine. It is a unique form of health care that is natural and non-invasive, meaning that no drugs, medicines, needles, or surgery are involved. Chiropractic helps you achieve a high level of health and well-being instead of only relieving pain.

Doctors of Chiropractic are primary health care providers and are recognized by governmental health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Workers’ Compensation programs and more. Every year, more than 30 million Americans see chiropractors as part of the regular health care programs. With over 84,000 licensed chiropractors nationwide and more than 10,000 students currently enrolled in chiropractic school, it is the fastest growing health care profession.

People with headaches, joint pain, neck pain, low back pain, and sciatica have done marvelously well under chiropractic care. The same goes with people who suffer from osteoarthritis, spinal disc conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. However, the scope of conditions that chiropractors provide care for is not limited to the common pains and problems listed above. Chiropractic has also benefited a variety of seemingly unrelated conditions such as allergies, asthma, digestive disorders, infant colic, ADHD, depression, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, infertility, autism, food sensitivities, autoimmune diseases, and many other disorders. Because Chiropractic is focused on proper nervous system function and the nervous system controls every function in the body, Chiropractic can benefit individuals with various problems. It’s so much more than back pain!

Chiropractic works with your body’s innate abilities to restore health and harmony by reestablishing balance in the nervous system. Chiropractors are the only experts in detecting and correcting subluxations in the spine. Once subluxations are corrected, the body does the rest. Your health comes from within, not from a pill!
