children with migrainesSeeing children with migraines is rare. Unfortunately, many parents and their kids don’t know that it actually does happen. That’s because whenever we think about migraines, we often associate it with adults.  While throbbing head pain is the symptom most often associated with a migraine, there are other symptoms as well. These are:

  • Nausea and possible vomiting
  • Pain in the abdominal region
  • Experiencing strange odors
  • Sensitivity to light, odors, and sound
  • Dizziness

Children with Migraines

Sadly, children with migraines do exists. In fact, the statistics are surprising with as much as 8 percent of boys and 23 percent of girls have at least one migraine before age 17. Thankfully, youths experience fewer migraines overall, which last a shorter duration than migraines in adults. However, no medication has been proven to be entirely safe and effective to give to children with migraines. Where does one begin to help a child if he or she is suffering from a migraine?

The first step should be to make sure that there is nothing more serious going on. This can be done by seeking the care of a neurologist or a family doctor. Once this is confirmed, sleep is the best way to care for migraines. This is true for children and adults alike.

As many as 90 percent of children have nausea and vomiting along with abdominal pain. Therefore, many family doctors will recommend taking antiemetics to ease these symptoms. In moderation, this can help, but caution must be exerted as too many can lead to rebound headaches which can be worse than migraines.

Getting Natural Migraine Help for Children

A good place to begin finding relief for children is to visit us here at Upper Cervical Chiropractic San Diego. If either of the top bones of the neck has misaligned – often due to a minor head trauma – they can place pressure on the brainstem leading to neurological issues such as migraines. We will examine the neck to see if there is a need for an adjustment. If so, we use a method that is extremely gentle and does not require us to pop or crack the neck, making it safe for children as well as adults. Once corrected, children often experience fewer headaches, or they may go away entirely.
