What Is Meniere’s Disease?
Symptoms of Meniere’s include vertigo (a feeling that the room is spinning), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and a feeling of fullness in the ear. It was once believed that these symptoms were the result of an excess of fluid in the inner ear, also called hydrops. This is considered an idiopathic condition, and diagnosis generally involves ruling out other conditions that could be causing the symptoms.

Since many of the symptoms of Meniere’s spring from the ear, it is reasonable that medical professionals would look there for the cause. Unfortunately, this predisposed bias has caused decades of research to be focused on the wrong part of the body. The real location of the problem is in the upper cervical spine, the result of a whiplash injury or other trauma to the head and neck area.
It is understandable, however, that this was missed for many years since the symptoms of Meniere’s come on long after the initial injury takes place. Sometimes it can take as long as 15 years for the injury to yield noticeable symptoms. Ultimately, the injuries cause a lesion that affects the Eustachian tubes. The trigeminal ganglion can also be affected creating the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia (TN).
Relief for Meniere’s Disease
It is much easier to provide effective relief for something once you understand the underlying cause. In this case, since Meniere’s springs from an upper cervical subluxation, the primary relief care is an upper cervical chiropractic adjustment. At Upper Cervical Chiropractic of San Diego, we use the Blair technique to create just such an adjustment for our patients.
