One of the characteristic features of Meniere’s disease is the vertigo that accompanies it. Meniere’s is a disorder that affects the inner ear and typically causes a combination of symptoms:
- Vertigo
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
- A feeling of fullness in the ear
- Fluctuating hearing loss
While there are many theories about the origins of Meniere’s disease, no definite answers have been established. Because of this lack of clarity, traditional relief options usually only serve to manage symptoms rather than address a potential cause. Since vertigo is the most disabling symptom associated with Meniere’s, most sufferers are usually prescribed a medication to try and relieve some of the dizziness.

A look at a recent study that followed 300 Meniere’s patients over the course of 6 years provides both insight and hope for those dealing with recurring vertigo attacks. These 300 patients underwent a course of upper cervical chiropractic care, a very specific type of care that focuses on realigning the uppermost vertebra in the neck. The eustachian tube of the ear is located very near the upper cervical spine, so any misalignment of the atlas (C1) or axis (C2) vertebrae can create the conditions under which the inner ear can’t drain or function properly.
One thing these 300 patients had in common was an upper cervical misalignment upon examination. Additionally, they all had some type of history of whiplash-type injury to the neck. The adjustments made a significant difference for 97% of the people involved in the study. This meant a return of quality of life – they were now able to work, drive, and have a better relationship with their families. If you have Meniere’s disease and your daily life is affected by vertigo attacks, then you may stand to benefit from upper cervical care.
