posture, sitting, ergonomics, back painWhile reading this, a person may be sitting down in a relaxed position. If one uses poor posture while sitting, his or her lungs may not be able to expand properly. This can affect overall health. Poor posture can become normal for a person, leading to increased muscle tension. The easiest way to alleviate that muscle tension is to slouch again, resulting in a cycle of improper posture. What is the harm in this?

Musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulders and neck often happen while someone is in a sitting position. Use of the computer is very common on a daily basis. If a person is on the computer at work and then again at home this person is at risk for developing back and neck problems along with a host of other health issues, just because of poor sitting posture.

Imagine a person sitting with his or her head in front of the shoulders, back curved. This is a leading cause of neck pain because stress is being put on the spine in the upper cervical (neck, shoulders, spine) area. This can cause an instability of the shoulder blades, resulting in decreased mobility of the upper extremities. The lumbar spine may become curved making the hips tilt forward and the stomach to protrude. Undue pressure is placed on the lower back and hips. If a person has a job that requires being on a computer, what can be done to help the spine?

How to Improve Posture

It is vital to have proper posture if you are sitting for long periods of time. The weight that is being put on the spine due to improper posture can do some real damage as it is not intended to handle that pressure. Some ideas to help improve posture are to use an ergonomic, soft chair, a lumbar pillow, or even a standing desk. Some standing desks can be lowered to allow a person to sit when they become tired of standing. Another great idea to improve posture is to get up and move approximately every 45 minutes. Doing some stretches and light exercises will definitely help your back and your posture. Starting these right away will help a person avoid future neck and back problems.
