The Right Way to Sleep

It is important to note, first of all, that sleeping on your stomach is the worst position for your neck and back. It forces the spine into an unnatural position. Sleeping on your side isn’t the best, but it is certainly better than sleeping on your stomach. If you have to sleep on your side, using a pillow between your knees will help keep your spine properly aligned during the night hours. Sleeping on your back, however, is optimal. This removes undue pressure from the lower back and neck.

To supplement your new sleeping position, I definitely recommend an active lifestyle. Exercise can have a great effect on back pain. In fact, sitting can make your back pain worse because it puts extra pressure on your lower back. Find something you enjoy doing, whether it is walking, swimming, Pilates, or something else entirely – the key things is that you have your body moving. I know back pain can make it tough to enjoy physical activity. Don’t overdo it. Just be sure to be active each day, and your back should actually gain strength and feel better.

This is because the spine is connected by various forms of tissue, and anything that happens at the top has to be compensated for further down the line.
