What is vertigo?
It is related to, although not the same as, dizziness. The difference is that vertigo involves a false sensation of movement. The person may feel as if he is spinning or the things around him may seem to be moving.
- Vertigo may be related to a problem within the inner ear
- During the years 1995 – 2004 vertigo was the cause of 2.5% of visits to the ER
- The number of vertigo patients rises to 40% after age 40
- As many as 10% of those living in America have vertigo
Vertigo is a symptom rather than a condition, being part of such illnesses as Meniere’s disease and multiple sclerosis. The vestibular system is responsible for sending signals to the brain about where the body is located in its environment. Vertigo is usually the result of a malfunction in this system.

If medication is prescribed by one’s primary care physician, it may help on a temporary basis to control vertigo. However, each individual is different and what works for one person may not be effective for the next. Medication also may be accompanied by unwanted side effects.
Another course of care often recommended involves specific exercises geared toward helping the body adapt better within its surroundings. While this may help unless the underlying cause is addressed, the problem will continue to occur.
Combating Vertigo with Upper Cervical Chiropractic
Much success has been seen using upper cervical chiropractic. This type of chiropractic focuses on making sure the bones of the upper neck are properly aligned. If either the atlas or axis – the top two bones of the spine – are found to be out of place, they may put the brainstem under extreme pressure. This leads to incorrect signals being sent to the brain and body about its position as well as other issues that may contribute to vertigo.
At Upper Cervical Chiropractic San Deigo, we use a gentle method to help realign these bones and bring the body back into proper harmony. This is often all that is needed to see a decrease in or an end to vertigo.
