When vertigo is accompanied by a migraine, it may be classified as a vestibular migraine, and it is extremely unpleasant. Women between the ages of 20 and 40 are most likely to be affected with this condition, although it can affect anyone. When women are coping with a vestibular migraine, stress and hormones can be additional factors that increase the severity of the condition. Symptoms that are often associated with vestibular migraines include:
- Sensitivity to sound
- Intolerance to movement of eyes, head, and body
- Ringing in the ears
- Neck pain accompanied by spasms of the upper cervical muscles
- Vertigo that occurs suddenly with possible nausea and vomiting
Oddly enough, these kinds of migraines may actually occur without a headache. Recommended care is prescription medication geared towards reducing signals coming from the inner ear to the brain. While this may help while the situation is occurring, if the underlying cause is not addressed, the vestibular migraine may occur again.

One reason that a person may get a vestibular migraine can be linked back to a misalignment in the upper cervical spine. The spine has the responsibility of caring for the delicate spinal cord. The spinal cord relays signals to and from the brain and body via the brainstem. If the top vertebra in the neck is misaligned, it can be putting undue pressure on the brainstem resulting in distorted signals being sent. The end result can be that of migraines and/or vertigo.
Upper cervical chiropractors are specially trained to find specific misalignments in this area of the neck. At Upper Cervical Chiropractic San Diego, we do not pop or twist the spine to realign it. Rather we use a gentle method to encourage the bones to realign. This is effective in many cases to help alleviate vestibular migraines and vertigo associated with them.
A case study of a 23-year-old woman suffering from headaches and vertigo symptoms 5 months after a concussion, revealed that her vertigo lessened after receiving an upper cervical adjustment. After just two months, she had total remission of her symptoms.
